What is Rowan’s Law? Rowan’s Law was named for Rowan Stringer, a high school rugby player from Ottawa, who died in the spring of 2013 from a condition known as second impact syndrome (swelling of the brain caused by a subsequent injury that occurred before a previous injury healed). Rowan is believed to have experienced three concussions over six days while playing rugby. She had a concussion but didn’t know her brain needed time to heal. Neither did her parents, teachers or coaches. On March 7, 2018, Ontario passed Rowan's Law (Concussion Safety), 2018 and related amendments to the Education Act. New rules requiring the review of Concussion Awareness Resources and Concussion Codes of Conduct came into effect on July 1, 2019. However, it is important to understand that this applies to all Sport Organizations, schools, programs and businesses in the province. This is not a hockey ‘thing’ – it is law/legislation (Ontario Regulation 161/19) from the Government of Ontario.
BDMHA must ensure that all athletes, parents of athletes under 18, coaches, team trainers and officials confirm every year that they have reviewed Ontario’s Concussion Awareness Resources and acknowledge having done so prior to the beginning of every Hockey Season. Player safety is extremely importation and we appreciate everyone's cooperation and understanding in this very important matter.
Acknowledgment forms for you to read and sign is available to PRINT ahead. (We will also have a few available, for those unable to print at at home, at in-person registration/ tryouts on Sept. 7/18. Age appropriate concussion awareness resources can be found at https://www.ontario.ca/page/rowans-law-concussion-safety and will also be available to view at registration.
If you are registering for the BDMHA 2019-20 season, this form must be completed with all other forms for the season and handed into your teams manager. PLEASE NOTE THAT NO PLAYER OR TEAM OFFICIAL WILL BE APPROVED ON ANY OMHA ROSTER WITHOUT COMPLETING THIS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FORM.
